The Dalí Quartet returns to Bravo! Vail Music Festival this summer and Sunday’s program highlights the first quartets of Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga and Alberto Ginastera alongside ErnÅ‘ Dohnányi’s roiling, celebratory Sextet.

“The Arriaga quartet showcases a fully developed voice from the 16-year-old composer, with elements reminiscent of his contemporaries including Beethoven and Schubert; but the Spanish-inflected rhythms and harmonies of his writing lend this quartet a profoundly affecting urgency and vulnerability,” said Ari Isaacman-Beck, violinist with the Dalí Quartet. “The Ginastera is wild and raucous, an Argentinian celebration of rustic dance rhythms alongside slashing 20th century harmonies. Its relentless drive contrasts gorgeously with a calm and poetic slow movement and lyrically dancing, folk-inspired tunes.”

The evening’s performance also includes principal clarinet and French horn players from the Philadelphia Orchestra, Ricardo Morales and Jennifer Montone, as well as Bravo! Vail’s artistic director Anne-Marie McDermott.

“The Dohnányi, for Clarinet, French Horn, Violin, Viola, Cello, and Piano is a Hungarian symphonic fantasy in four movements, full of wonder, intrigue, darkness, and a tongue-in-cheek, celebratory final movement that maintains a brilliant sense of humor until the final chords,” Isaacman-Beck said.
