Prep notebook: Battle Mountain girls soccer defeats Glenwood Springs in league opener

The Battle Mountain girls soccer team opened league play with a 3-1 win over Glenwood Springs on Wednesday in Edwards.

After a scoreless first half, the Demons got on the board first midway through the second half. Battle Mountain junior Thea Armistead tied things up with a nice finish into the left corner. The Huskies’ attack continued to press, gaining confidence with senior Elle Keenan’s go-ahead goal. With two minutes remaining, Viri Herrera put a spectacular right-footer into the back of the net to seal the deal.

“It was great to see our attacking chemistry build through the course of the game and eventually see it pay off with three quality goals,” coach Lauren Lux said. “Those last 15 minutes really set the stage for the next phase of our season.”



Battle Mountain improved to 2-1-1 on the year and heads to Summit on Saturday.

Other prep notes

  • Summit received goals from Annika Broecker and June Billinghurst and an assist from Ella Kirschner to defeat Eagle Valley 2-1 on Tuesday in Gypsum. The Devils (2-2-1 overall, 1-1 league) host Montrose on Thursday.
  • The Eagle Valley boys baseball team won its first game of the year last Friday, defeating Alamosa 14-5. The Devils racked up 10 hits in the victory, led by Eli Adams. The freshman went 2-for-4 from the plate and drove in five runs. Sophomore Mason McCormick was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three runs and Hudson Rozga picked up the win on the mound after striking out four in three innings. Eagle Valley (1-2) travels to Broomfield on Friday to face Holy Family (4-1).
  • The Battle Mountain boys baseball team defeated Grand Valley 9-7 last Thursday to improve to 1-1. The Huskies host Moffat County for a doubleheader on Saturday.
