Battle Mountain bested Eagle Valley 20-0 in the first girls lacrosse rivalry match of the 2025 season on Friday. The game, originally scheduled to be held in Edwards, was moved to Gypsum due to weather. Eight Huskies contributed to the scoring, led by Murphy Werner, who tallied five goals. Addie O’Connor, Izzy Adochio and Palmer Ulvestad each poured in three goals apiece for Battle Mountain, which improved to 3-0 on the year. The Devils dropped to 0-3.
The Huskies haven’t lost a regular season game since April 29, 2023 when they fell to Denver South 12-11.

Lacrosse notes: Aspen defeats Vail Mountain School
- Aspen took down Vail Mountain School 8-6 on Monday, staking an early claim on the 4A Western Slope League. The Gore Rangers (1-1) will look to get their second league win against Summit on Saturday at home.
- The Battle Mountain boys lost to Evergreen 12-8 in the season opener on March 13. Carter Shonk scored four goals, Keelan Losa chipped in three more and Joseph Dekanich tallied three assists in the loss.
- Inclement weather forced cancellations of the Battle Mountain baseball game against Glenwood Springs and the Battle Mountain girls lacrosse match at Roaring Fork, both scheduled for March 18. The boys lacrosse game between Battle Mountain and Eagle Valley scheduled for Tuesday also was canceled. The Devils forfeited on account of low numbers and injuries; the game will not be rescheduled and will count as a win for the Huskies.
Eagle Valley boys track wins season opener in Rifle
The Eagle Valley boys track team tallied 134 points to win the 18-team Rifle Invitational on Friday. The Devils secured numerous individual event wins and also won the 4×200 and 4×800-meter relays.
Kingston Clous destroyed the 100-meter dash field, running 11.67 seconds to win by nearly half a second. Clous also won the long jump. Devils’ all-state cross-country runner Tyler Blair dusted the 1600-meter field with a personal best of 4:26.41 to finish 13 seconds clear of runner-up Towler Scott. The junior returned later in the afternoon to win the 800 in 2:05.5. Blake Anderson carried a hefty load, winning the 400-meter dash by over three seconds, finishing second in the 200 and contributing to the 4×200-meter relay victory.
The Eagle Valley girls finished fourth with 60 points as Coal Ridge (105) took the win. The Devils received event wins from Zakia Shreeve (100 hurdles, long jump) and claimed the 4×100-meter relay crown as well. Freshman Sierra Velasco ran 56.72 in her first varsity 300-meter hurdles race to claim the silver medal.

Eagle Valley harrier sets school record at Nike Indoor Nationals
Dylan Blair set Eagle Valley’s sea-level school record for the two-mile at the Nike Indoor Nationals on March 14 in New York City. Blair covered 16 laps of The Armory indoor track in 9:03.22, a 29.64-second personal best and the 31st-best prep time in the U.S. this year.

Blair qualified for the event with his 3200-meter performance at the Great Southwest Indoor Classic at the University of New Mexico on Feb. 15. His 9:32.86 at 5,312 feet converted to a 9:13 time at sea-level, just under the 9:15 qualifying standard for the highly-competitive national competition. Despite coming in as the 41st-ranked runner in the 44-person field, Blair finished fourth in his section and 18th overall, easily besting the mark 2023 Eagle Valley graduate Jake Drever set when he ran 9:10.20 for 3200-meters at the Arcadia Invitational two years ago. Blair’s 9:03.22 for the full two-mile to a 9:00.07 for 3200 meters.
Huskies win skimeister state titles
Battle Mountain skiers Ruth DeMino and Kai Skellion kept the Colorado High School ߣÏÈÉú League skimeister state title trophies in Edwards. Following in the footsteps of three-time winner Lindsey Whitton two-time champion Theo Krueger, DeMino and Skellion secured the award given to the best all-around Alpine and Nordic prep skier in the state.
The state champion was determined by taking each athletes’ best finish throughout the regular season in each discipline (giant slalom, slalom, classic and skate) and adding those four values to the score from each discipline at the ߣÏÈÉúmeister Championships, which took place on March 4 at ߣÏÈÉú Cooper and Tennessee Pass. Regular-season performances were doubled in weight,
While Summit’s James Sowers won all four events on March 4, the senior couldn’t forge a comeback on Skellion on account of his DNF posted in the Beaver Creek slalom race on Jan. 31. Meanwhile, on the girls’ side, Ruthie DeMino narrowly edged her younger sister, Eden, for the title.
